 アメリカや日本を含めた世界の大半が、ノンクレイマントと呼ばれる、南極への領有権主張をしないし他国にも認めない国々です。南極に領有権主張をしている国、クレイマントは、オーストラリアの他、ニュージーランド・イギリス・フランス・ノルウェー、そして、チリとアルゼンチンです。(ウィキペディア に[[wpjp>南極における領有権主張の一覧]] というページがあります。)
 米国政府による南極条約の解釈は以下のようになります。
